As a Linux fan, I love the sheer “openness” of open source software. I love the fact that I can customize everything to a degree where no sane person would go. I love the fact that anyone can take an existing release, tweak it a little and call it a whole new distro. Some unenlightened types think this is a waste of time and reasonably point out that you could easily make the same modifications on your own. But those kinds of people are just no fun.
However … there are limits. Even for me.
I came across a review of the – wait for it – “Hannah Montana Linux” distro. Yes, that Hannah Montana. Is this what we’ve been waiting for all these eons? Perhaps the Year of the Linux Desktop has finally arrived.
Perhaps not.
If you are actually interested in the tech specs, it’s based on Kubuntu, though it seems like they’ve just added some pics, some sounds and themed it a little. But, let’s not get hung up on detail. The reviewer takes exception to the amount of purple featured on the desktop. That is soooo unfair. As a big fan of purple, I take exception to the amount of Hannah Montana on the desktop!
I’ve taken the liberty of copying a quote from the review:
“And the horrific sight of Tux sitting on the desktop with a Hannah Montana logo on his chest. Well let’s just say it left me thirsting for the righteous wallpaper found in Ubuntu: Satanic Edition. I’d much rather have picture of some evil chick with satanic hooters on my desktop than a bastardized Hannah Montana picture of Tux any day.“
Satanic Hooters or Hannah Montana? You decide.

I’m already hard at work on a Hilary Duff Distro based on Debian. No really, I’m serious.
Heehee, think I’ll create a Green Day distro. All I need is a green-themed distro like Mint or Suse and a few hawt pics of Billie Joe and I’m sorted. It could play “Welcome to Paradise” as the startup sound. I’ll call it “Green Day Linux” or BillieBuntu or something. (I’ve put a lot of thought into this lol).
Fabulous, I have now seen this distro in two places and had to laugh at both of the responses. Still, this may be a way forward for the future generations, if we get them interested enough early enough with this type of distro, Linux may finally have its day.
Leaving my mocking aside, if you have a young daughter who loves Hannah Montana, well, why not? All her friends will be so impressed with the “Hannah” computer that they’d want one too!
I think this is awesome. I’m not into Hannah Montana by any means, but if you can get kids into something other than Windows and Mac OS the that can’t be a bad thing.
Celebrity tapping into opensource for its growing fanbase..
Well, if its free, perhaps the reach will be more than a paid product?’
